CROWNING GLORIES OF CLASS 1980

Batch 1980 is the most unique batch among the rest of the Arellanites. It was known as the "EXPERIMENTAL BATCH" since the students were grouped into three main sections: the In-School-Off-School Approach (ISOSA), the BILINGUAL and the ORDINARY classes.

With this batch, the school's twin newspaper, Ang Tambuli and The Chronicler, got second place in the 1980 National Secondary School Press Conference. Other significant events were the discovery by Eliseo Marcial of an effective insecticide out of Kakawate that was later sent to the Technological Research Center (TRC) for further evaluation. Evelyn Tuesca, who was called Sisa by her peers and our Mananalumpati ng Taon sa Ingles won second place in the Timpalak Talumpatian sponsored by the National Economic Protectionism Association (NEPA).

BATCH '80: ON THE GO!

Members of class 1980 take pride in their achievements during the commemoration of their Silver Jubilee Year. EMCEEFirst and foremost, was the active participation of the Dynamic Trio: Rene Sangalang, Ricardo Banta and Evelyn Tuesca-Alvarez, in the Arellano (Manila North) High School Alumni Association (AMNHSAA) as President, Treasurer and Assistant Secretary respectively in addition to being EMCEEs in all of the alumni activities. It was the first time after the alumni’s constitution and by-laws was amended that the three members of one class served as elective and appointive officers.

During the July 11, 2004 monthly meeting, members of class 1980 gathered again to approve and sign the documents for registration with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). This was another milestone that this batch had reached to make the association operates legally.

Class 1980 together with class 1981 represented the AMNHSAA as hosts to the Leadership Workshop dubbed as EXTRA CHALLENGE: Towards Responsible and Accountable Student Leaders. XCHALLENGEThe workshop that was attended by 85 class officers from first year to fourth year was held at the school compound last October 23, 2004. It was also a result of consultation meeting with AHS Principal, Dr. Adelina Espina – who suggested the topic and the need of the present students. With the leadership of AMNHSAA President C/M Rene Sangalang, the activity was conceptualized and arranged through the active participation of the abovementioned batches that spent time, effort and resources to make the noble undertaking a success.

Another project of this batch was the Medical-Dental Mission entitled SAGIP BUHAY: OPLAN GAMUTAN MED MISSION in cooperation with Buhay Marino – DZAR Angel Radyo 1026 last November 27, 2004 at AHS Quadrangle. The program, which aimed to provide dental and medical treatments to the family of Arellano High School’s students and teachers and residents near the school vicinity benefited 51 dental and 160 medical patients. Other patients who were not attended to due to time constraints were given vitamins and other medicines.

To continue giving lights and knowledge, this batch has sponsored five scholarship grants to deserving third and fourth year students of AHS. This year’s grantees are Jessica Lavarias, Leez Vanessa Barquilla and Chia Camille Ortega from third year and Randy Ryan Espina and Ma. Christina Aquino from fourth year.

BADMINTON         The projects do not end here since batch ‘80 continues to raise funds to benefit the school and its students. In this connection, the first ever Class 1980 & Friends Badminton Tournament chaired by Edwin Malibiran was held on January 30, 2005 at Citismash Badminton Center in Sta. Cruz, Manila.

As a matter of fact, the hearts of all the members of AHS Class 1980 are still with the school, the institution that helped in charting their destinies. This is to prove that AHS will always march onward and as other Arellanites say, Batch ’80 also shall ever be willing to fight for the green and white.
